Learning is beautiful

Last night my girlfriend and I went to watch “The marriage of Figaro” at the California opera theater in San Jose. It was our way to celebrate Valentine’s day. The opera was a delightful melange of funny situations, human sentiments and music, all playing over the background of the marriage of Figaro and Susanna. The music was cheerful, powerful at times, sad at others and just in perfect harmony with the synopsis. A cruel Count, always looking for new adventures who realizes what he has only when he believes he is about to lose it. An unhappy countess trying to get his husband attention. Two newly weds in love with each other at times victims of their own clever manipulations. And the sharp character of Cherubino, always bringing sparks and playfulness to the situations, constant symbol of motion in the story. We left the theater with a sense of joy and in love with Mozart’s music. I truly believe that The marriage of Figaro is one of his best compositions, even though I have yet to listen to much of his work. The actors of the San Jose opera performed well, in my opinion, also giving a little of spontaneity to their characters, especially when Cherubino was there to mess things up.

I was pleasantly surprised to see quite a few children in the theater last night. Even though the opera was written more than 200 years ago, it’s incredibly contemporary and although you may think of it as boring or out-of-date, is well embedded in the present culture. And you have probably already listened to it. Take a look at this clip:

Another great example is the beautiful musical film Amadeus, loosely based on the lives of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri, where the opera is also shown. The anecdote that the emperor Joseph II almost denied the reproduction of the opera, however, is just a myth. The libretto was actually approved by Joseph II before any music was written. That doesn’t take away the fact that the movie is well worth his many awards and success.

This beautiful genre of music is a significant part of our culture and it should be preserved. If you see it playing at your local theater, don’t miss on the occasion of watching it.

Ieri sera io e la mia ragazza siamo andati a vedere “Le nozze di Figaro” al California Theatre di San Jose. Era il nostro modo di celebrare San Valentino. L’opera è un delizioso miscuglio di situazioni divertenti, sentimenti e musica, tutto sullo sfondo delle nozze di Figaro e Susanna. La musica è allegra, maestosa, a volte triste ed in perfetta armonia con la trama. Un Conte crudele, sempre alla ricerca di nuove avventure che si rende conto di quello che ha soltanto quando sta per perderlo. Una contessa infelice che desidera l’attenzione di suo marito. Due sposi innamorati a volte vittime delle loro proprie abili manipolazioni. Ed il vispo carattere di Cherubino, sempre creatore di scintille e divertimento nelle situazioni, simbolo costante di movimento nella trama. Abbiamo lasciato il teatro con una sensazione di gioia ed innamorati della musica di Mozart. Io penso che “Le nozze di Figaro” sia una delle suo migliori composizioni, anche se non ho ancora ascoltato tutto il suo lavoro. Gli attori dell’opera di San Jose hanno recitato bene, secondo me, persino dando un tocco di spontaneità ai loro personaggi, specialmente quando Cherubino si trovava in scena.

Sono rimasto positivamente sorpreso di vedere bambini nel teatro ieri sera. Anche Le nozze di Figaro è stata scritta piu’ di 200 anni fa è incredibilmente contemporanea. E sebbene puoi pensare che sia noiosa o datata è invece ben incorporata nella cultura di oggi. E probabilmente l’hai già ascoltata. Dai un’occhiata a questo clip:

Un altro buon esempio è il bellissimo film musicale Amadeus, largamente basato sulle vite di Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ed Antonio Salieri, dove Le nozze di Figaro viene anche mostrata. L’aneddoto dove l’imperatore Joseph II quasi bandi’ l’opera di Mozart è comunque solo un mito. Il libretto fu in realtà approvato da Joseph Il prima che la musica venisse scritta. Cio’ senza nulla togliere al fatto che il film è eccellente e merita il successo ed i molti premi ricevuti.

Questo bellissimo genere di musica è una parte importante della nostra cultura e deve essere mantenuto. Se viene messa in scena nel tuo teatro locale non perdere l’occasione di andare a vederla.
