Bagpipes and accordion, pieces of Italian folklore

La zampogna e l’organetto sono due strumenti musicali tipici del folclore italiano. Il primo viene normalmente suonato durante il periodo natalizio, ed è composto da due canne a singola o doppia ancia, una sacca di accumulo dell’aria ed una cannetta che serve da insufflatore. L’aria immessa mette in vibrazione le ance inserite nelle canne melodiche, creando così il suono.
Il secondo (formalmente fisarmonica diatonica) è uno strumento a mantice, provvisto di ance libere (sottili linguette di acciaio) fissate su una piastrina di ottone forata, in modo da consentire alle stesse di vibrare liberamente sotto il soffio dell’aria, producendo così il suono. Viene suonato comprimendo ed espandendo il mantice e premendo chiavi che causano l’apertura di valvole, che a loro volta permettono all’aria di passare attraverso le ance libere.
Leo e suo figlio Giuseppe sono stati così gentili da venire da noi a suonarci alcuni pezzi con entrambi gli strumenti.

The bagpipes and the accordion are two musical instruments typical of Italian folk music. The first is normally played during Christmas, and consists of two single or double-reed pipes, a bag for air accumulation and a little pipe serving as insufflator. The air pumped in the insufflator gets the reeds inserted in the melodic pipes to vibrate, hence creating the sound.
The second is a bellow-driven instrument, fitted with free reeds (thin strips of brass or steel) fixed on a brass plate with holes to allow them to vibrate freely under the flow of air. It is played by compressing or expanding a bellows whilst pressing buttons or keys, causing valves, called pallets, to open, which allow air to flow across the reeds that in turn vibrate to produce sound inside the body.
Leo and his son Giuseppe were so kind to come to us to play a few songs with both instruments.
In the first video, Leo plays with the bagpipes one of the most known Italian Christmas carols, “Tu scendi dalle stelle” (You come down from the stars), accompanied on the tambourine by Giuseppe.
In the second video, Giuseppe performs a beautiful Calabrian tarantella on the accordion accompanied by Leo on the tambourine.
