I just finished reading an amazing book and I wanted to recommend it here in this post. The subject is evolution, and the book is called “The Selfish Gene“. The author: Richard Dawkins. It’s not a new book, it’s actually an old book first published in 1976 but I thought that it was astonishingly well written, and even though it first came out over 30 years ago it still described a new way to look at evolution, a way I had never thought about before.

Richard Dawkins tells the story of “the greatest show on earth”, as he calls it in a more recent book of his, through the eyes of the genes. It starts his journey from the primordial soup where the first molecules that could make a copy of themselves (called “replicators”) popped up, and ending up all the way in our time where these replicators are still around, embedded in our bodies, only now they go by the name of genes.

These genes copy themselves very accurately, and their purpose is to stay around as long as they can, possibly forever. Over time they developed the tendency to create “biological robots” to protect them, and to pass a copy of themselves along to the next generation. That’s what we truly are. We are these genes’ survival machines, and the genes themselves contain the information, spread all over in our bodies inside every cell, to build new bodies, to survive and to reproduce.

I am tempted to tell you more because there is a lot more in the book, but if you are interested it’s much better if you find out for yourself. It’s a great read, and if you like science, you will be as amazed as I am.

Ho appena finito di leggere un bellissimo libro che vorrei segnalare in questo post. Il soggetto è l’evoluzione, ed il libro si chiama “Il gene egoista“. L’autore: Richard Dawkins. Non è un libro recente, anzi è piuttosto vecchio. Publicato per la prima volta nel 1976, è scritto incredibilmente bene, ed anche se è uscito più di 30 anni fa, descrive ancora un modo nuovo di guardare all’evoluzione, un modo a cui non avevo pensato prima.

Richard Dawkins racconta la storia de “Il più grande spettacolo della terra” (come lo chiama lui in un suo libro più recente): l’evoluzione attraverso gli occhi dei geni. Inizia direttamente dalla famosa zuppa primordiale dove spuntarono le prime molecole che poterono creare una copia di esse stesse (chiamate “replicatori”), fino ad arrivare ai giorni nostri dove questi replicatori sono ancora ingiro, nascosti nei nostri corpi, solo che adesso vengono chiamati geni.

Questi geni si copiano con molta efficacia, ed il loro scopo è rimanere ingiro il più a lungo possibile, possibilmente per sempre. Nel corso del tempo hanno sviluppato la tendenza a creare “robot biologici” per proteggersi, e per trasmettere una copia di se stessi alla prossima generazione. Questo è ciò che noi siamo veramente, macchine di sopravvivenza dei nostri geni, e questi stessi geni contengono le informazioni, distribuite in tutto il nostro corpo all’interno di ogni cellula, per costruire nuovi corpi, per sopravvivere e per riprodurre.

Sono tentato di dirvi di più, perche’ c’è molto di più nel libro, ma se siete interessati è molto meglio che lo leggiate da soli. E’ una gran bella lettura, e se vi piace la scienza, ne sarete certamente affascinati.

Finalmente, dopo la pressione esercitata dai mercati e dall’Unione Europea Silvio Berlusconi si è dimesso dalla carica di Presidente del Consiglio. Sarebbe stato preferibile che se ne fosse andato per i suoi rapporti con la mafia, conflitti di interessi, fondi neri, corruzioni e tangenti. Ma accontentiamoci…

In una esilarante intervista a Servizio Pubblico, Bersani ha dichiarato: “Lo abbiamo buttato giù noi”. Non ci crede nemmeno lui. Visto che sono stati i geni del centrosinistra a tenere in piedi e resuscitare più volte B. in questi ultimi diciassette anni.

Ed adesso? Domani Napolitano nominerà Mario Monti nuovo Presidente del Consiglio, il quale indicherà i membri del nuovo governo.

Sfortunatamente il parlamento che dovrà discutere e votare le leggi che saranno presentate dal nuovo esecutivo è lo stesso identico parlamento che ha votato per tutte le leggi vergogna presentate dal Caimano in questi ultimi tre anni. Sarà interessante conoscere l’elenco dei ministri ed il programma del nuovo governo. Mario Monti, anche se sembra piacere a tutti, è un illustre esponente dell’establishment finanziario internazionale che ha creato questa crisi in primo luogo, ed ho l’impressione che cercherà di risanare i conti pubblici con uno dei due metodi preferiti dai politici: alzando le tasse o riducendo i servizi. L’Italia ha la sfortuna (o la fortuna) di possedere dei bacini di denaro immensi che si chiamano evasione fiscale, corruzione, mafie e costi della politica. Bacini di denaro che ammontano a centinaia di miliardi di euro. Per non parlare degli sprechi creati dagli ormai innumerevoli conflitti di interessi, tanto cari al dimissionario Silvio ed a molti altri esponenti della classe politica e finanziaria. La mia domanda, e forse anche speranza è: perché non provare a raccattare un po’ di denaro anche da lì?

Finally, after pressure from the markets and the European Union Silvio Berlusconi has resigned as Prime Minister of Italy (yay! ). It would have been better if he had left for his ties with the Mafia, conflicts of interests, tax evasions, bribery and corruptions. But let’s be happy with this, too…

In a hilarious interview, Bersani (the leader of the PD, the major opposing party) has said: “We knocked Berlusconi down.” He’s probably the only person who believes that, since his party was the reason why Berlusconi lasted for so long.

And what now? Tomorrow the President of the Republic Napolitano will appoint as new Prime Minister, the economist Mario Monti, who will indicate to the president the members of the new government.

Unfortunately, the parliament that will be called to discuss and vote on laws presented by the new government is exactly the same parliament that voted for the shameful custom-made laws presented by Mr. B over the past three years. It will be interesting to know the list of Ministers and the new government’s program. Mario Monti, although it seems to please everyone, is a prominent member of the financial establishment that created this global financial crisis in the first place, and I’m getting the impression that he will try to put Italy’s numbers in order by whether raising taxes or reducing social services. Italy has the misfortune (or fortune) to have immense pools of money to dig from such as called tax evasion, corruption, mafia and the huge cost of politics. Basins of money amounting to hundreds of billions of euros. Not to mention the waste created by the now numerous conflicts of interests, so dear to our Silvio and many other members of the political and financial establishment. My question, and perhaps my hope is: why not try to get a bit of money from there too?

An article of the New York Times of two days ago about Steve Jobs‘ autobiography by Walter Isaacson, reveals that Jobs delayed surgery for cancer for nine months. At the beginning, he relied instead on “fruit juices, acupuncture, herbal remedies and other treatments — some of which he found on the Internet”. Even though friends and family urged him to have surgery and chemotherapy right away, he insisted on delaying the treatment.
Now, would earlier treatment saved or prolonged his life? There is no way to know, but nine months is a long time for cancer to spread.

Do you still believe that there is no harm in alternative medicine?

Un articolo del New York Times di due giorni fa sull’autobiografia di Steve Jobs di Walter Isaacson, rivela che Jobs ha ritardato l’intervento chirurgico per il suo cancro di nove mesi. All’inizio, si è invece affidato a “succhi di frutta, agopuntura, rimedi erboristici ed altri trattamenti – alcuni dei quali trovati su Internet”. Anche se amici e familiari insistevano che si sottoponesse subito all’intervento chirurgico ed alla chemioterapia, lui ha continuato a ritardare il trattamento.
Se avesse iniziato il trattamento da subito, sarebbe ancora vivo? Non c’è modo di saperlo, ma nove mesi è un lungo periodo di tempo per un cancro.

Credi ancora che non ci sia nulla di male nella medicina alternativa?

On June 5, 2012 in the US and June 6, 2012 in Europe, it will be the last chance for almost all of us alive today to see Venus passing in front of the Sun. This event happens only twice every 120 years. It will occur again in December 2117 and in December 2125, and I don’t intend to wait that long…

The best place to observe the phenomenon will be the central and western Pacific Ocean. People in North America can witness the beginning of the transit, while people in South Asia, the Middle East and much of Europe will be seeing the final part, unless the clouds will be on the way. The transit will not be visible in most of South America and western Africa. Here is a table with the list of several cities around the globe and transit times, here is a table with the transit times for cities in USA.

Venus has transited in front of the face of the Sun only 6 times in the last 500 years. It happened in 1639, and to put a little perspective
on how long ago that was, it was the year when the first printing press was operated in the US. It happened again in 1761, when the Soho Manufactory was first opened, which soon pioneered the assembly line principle. It occurred in 1769, when James Watt was granted a patent for the invention of the steam engine. In 1874, when the first blue jeans were patented and sold by Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis. Venus transited again in 1882, while on Earth Thomas Edison flipped the switch to the first commercial electrical power plant in history, lighting one square mile of lower Manhattan, effectively marking the beginning of the electrical age. Finally, it happened again in 2004, the year Facebook was invented. What year will 2012 be remembered for? Well, I know of one event that will happen with absolute certainty, and I know I will be putting my solar filter on, and will enjoy the show.

Il 5 giugno 2012 in America ed il 6 Giugno 2012 in Europa, sarà l’ultima occasione per quasi tutti noi oggi in vita per vedere Venere transitare davanti al sole. Questo evento accade solo due volte ogni 120 anni. Succederà di nuovo nel 2117 e nel 2125, e non intendo aspettare così tanto…

Il luogo migliore dove poter osservare il fenomeno sarà la parte centrale e occidentale dell’Oceano Pacifico. Il nord America potrà assistere all’inizio del transito, mentre l’Asia Meridionale, il Medio oriente e gran parte dell’Europa potrà osservare la parte finale (a meno che le nuvole non si metteranno di traverso). Il transito non sarà visibile nella maggior parte del Sud America e nella parte occidentale dell’Africa. Il pianeta Venere è transitato di fronte al Sole solo 6 volte negli ultimi 500 anni. E’ successo nel 1639, e per renderci conto di quanto tempo è passato, quello era l’anno in cui la prima macchina da stampa venne operata negli Stati Uniti. E’ successo di nuovo nel 1761, lo stesso anno in cui la fabbrica di Soho venne aperta, che ben presto avrebbe utilizzato per la prima volta il principio della linea di montaggio. This year’s Nobel Prize in physics was awarded jointly to Brian P. Schmidt, Saul Perlmutter and Adam G. Riess for the discovery of the acceleration of the expansion of the universe.

In 1998 two different teams measured the distances of galaxies very far apart from each other, expecting them to get farther away at a slower rate as time passed by. They were expecting this result because everyone thought that gravity would eventually pull together all matter. To their astonishment, the teams discovered that the galaxies were getting farther away from each other with a higher rate as time passed by. The universe is accelerating.

But what causes the acceleration? Well, the answer is simple: we don’t know. We know that galaxies are embedded into the fabric of space-time, and that a mysterious “force” (physicist still don’t know if it is actually a force) called dark energy is stretching space-time, accelerating the expansion of the universe. Dark energy seems to amount to 95% of all the universe. The “regular” matter that makes up galaxies, planets and ourselves accounts for only 1% of the universe. A tiny portion. The remaining 4% is made of another mysterious matter called “dark matter“. It’s called dark matter because it doesn’t interact with light, and therefore it can’t be directly observed. However, it does interact with regular matter through gravity. Below is the video of the Nobel Prize announcement.

Il premio Nobel per la fisica di quest’anno è stato assegnato congiuntamente a Brian P. Schmidt, Saul Perlmutter e Adam G. Riess per la scoperta dell’accelerazione dell’espansione dell’universo.

Nel 1998, due diversi gruppi di ricercatori hanno misurato le distanze tra galassie molto distanti le une dalle altre, aspettandosi che si allontanassero ad una velocità sempre minore con il passare del tempo. Si aspettavano questo risultato perché tutti pensavano che la gravità avrebbe attratto insieme tutta la materia, rallentando l’espansione dell’universo. Esterrefatti, i due gruppi hanno scoperto che le galassie si stanno allontanando le une dalle altre con una velocità sempre maggiore. L’universo sta accelerando.

Ma cosa provoca questa accelerazione? Beh, la risposta è semplice: non lo sappiamo. Sappiamo che le galassie sono incorporate nel tessuto dello spazio-tempo, e che una misteriosa “forza” (i fisici non sanno ancora se in realtà è una forza) chiamata energia oscura sta allargando lo spazio-tempo, accelerando l’espansione dell’universo. L’ energia oscura sembra ammontare al 95% di tutto l’universo. La materia “normale” che compone le galassie, i pianeti e noi stessi rappresenta solo l’1%. Una piccola parte. Il restante 4% è fatto di un’altra materia misteriosa chiamata “materia oscura“. Si chiama materia oscura perché non interagisce con la luce e quindi non può essere osservata direttamente. The Opera particle detector

Yesterday a group of researchers in the Gran Sasso in Italy published their results of an experiment on the speed of neutrinos (neutrinos are subamotic particles with an incredibly small mass, and that hardly interact with matter). Their calculations show that neutrinos traveled faster than the speed of light of 60 ns, with a margin error of +/- 10 ns. When I first read the news my first reaction was of shock, followed by skepticism. Of course, if the results of the experiments turned out to be confirmed, the consequences would be huge. Most of modern physics is based on the assumption that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, according to the theory of special relativity formulated in 1905 by Albert Einstein. Such a discovery would force physicists to rethink much of the theory. Although, what is already being correctly explained by relativity should still be valid.

The team who made the experiment, lead by Prof. Ereditato at the Opera (Oscillation Project with Emulsion-tRacking Apparatus), claims to be very secure about its calculations, but they want the scientific community to scrutinise them. What seems more plausible is that there is an error either in the data or in the calculations, but let’s the scientists verify the results of the experiment before jumping to any conclusion.

Relativity has been tested every day for a long period of time, and much time passed after it was fully accepted. Since the results of this experiment are extraordinary, they will need extraordinary checking.

Einstein formulò la teoria della relatività speciale nel 1905

Ieri un gruppo di ricercatori nel Gran Sasso ha pubblicato i risultati di un esperimento sulla velocità di neutrini (i nuetrini sono delle particelle subatomiche con una massa quasi nulla, e che interagiscono molto raramente con la materia). I loro calcoli mostrano che i neutrini viaggiato più veloce della velocità della luce di 60 ns, con un margine di errore di +/- 10 ns. Quando ho letto la notizia la mia prima reazione è stata di shock, seguita da scetticismo. Naturalmente, se i risultati degli esperimenti fossero confermati, le conseguenze sarebbero enormi. La maggior parte della fisica moderna si basa sul presupposto che nulla può viaggiare più veloce della velocità della luce, secondo la teoria della relatività speciale formulata nel 1905 da Albert Einstein. Una tale scoperta costringerebbe i fisici a rivedere gran parte della teoria. Anche se, quello che viene già correttamente spiegato dalla relatività dovrebbe essere ancora valido.

La squadra che ha fatto l’esperimento, guidato dal Prof. Ereditato all’Opera (Oscillation Project with Emulsion-tRacking Apparatus), afferma di essere molto sicura sui calcoli, ma vogliono che la comunità scientifica li esamini. Quello che sembra più plausibile è che ci sia un errore sia nei dati o nei calcoli, ma aspettiamo che gli scienziati verifichino i risultati della sperimentazione prima di saltare a qualsiasi conclusione.

La relatività è stata testata ogni giorno per un lungo periodo di tempo, e molto tempo e’ passato prima che che venisse completamente accettata. Poiché i risultati di questo esperimento sono straordinari, avranno bisogno di controlli straordinari.

E’ notizia di qualche minuto fa’ che la conferenza dei capigruppo del Senato ha respinto la calendarizzazione della proposta di legge di iniziativa popolare “parlamento pulito“. Tutti i capigruppo hanno votato contro la calendarizzazione, tranne il capogruppo dell’IDV Felice Belisario. Il capogruppo del PD (i diversamente concordi) al Senato è Anna Finocchiaro, un’ipocrita che ogni giorno va in televisione a pretendere di opporsi al governo mentre dietro le quinte si comporta schifosamente come gli altri. Le ho appena invitato questa email:

On. Finocchiaro,

ho appena saputo che la conferenza dei capigruppo del Senato ha respinto la calendarizzazione della proposta di legge di iniziativa popolare “parlamento pulito”. Ed ho anche letto che lei ha votato contro la calendarizzazione.

Bene, adesso sappiamo chi è a favore e chi è contro la rimozione dei condannati in via definitiva dal parlamento, chi è a favore e chi è contro questa legge elettorale, e chi è a favore e chi è contro la continua permanenza in parlamento dei politici, sfaforendo il ricambio della classe dirigente. “Parlamento pulito” è una proposta di legge firmata da 350.000 cittadini, strumento previsto dalla costituzione.

Quello che mi offende di più è la sua ipocrisia, e quella del suo partito, che avete la faccia tosta di andare ogni giorno in televisione a proporvi come alternativa quando invece vi comportate esattamente come il PDL. Per fortuna nel PD ci sono persone che fanno davvero l’opposizione ogni giorno, ma purtroppo i dirigenti sono persone come lei che si fingono oppositori.

E voi dovreste essere quelli a guidare il paese dopo Berlusconi? Per quanto mi sforzi, non vedo nessuna differenza.

It’s a well known fact in astronomy that most stars have a companion, or in other words, they are part of a binary system. It was therefore thought for many years that existence of planets in a system with two stars was a plausible hypothesis. Yesterday, NASA’s Kepler mission turned this hypothesis into a reality. In fact, Kepler detected such a planet, named Kepler 16-b, by observing its transit in front of his parent stars. Kepler cannot see the planet directly, but it can measure the reduction of brightness from the star when the planet is crossing in front of it.

It turns out, though, that Kepler 16-b could never harbour life. In fact it’s a cold giant, about the size of Saturn and probably made half of rock and half of gas, orbiting two stars 200 light-years from Earth. Both stars are smaller than our sun. The bigger is 69% the mass of the sun, while the second smallest is a mere 20% our star’ mass. Kepler 16-b orbits both stars every 229 days. An orbit period similar to Venus’ 225 days. However, the planet is outside the habitable zone, where liquid water could form, because both stars are dimmer than our sun.

It’s interesting the way the discovery was made. A research team lead by Laurance Doyle of the SETI Institute in Mountain View, CA, analysed Kepler’s data and saw that both stars eclipsed each other from Earth’s point of view. Therefore the brightness of the system reduced when either the smaller star was passing in front of the bigger one, or when the bigger star was passing in front of the smaller one. However, the team noticed a dip in brightness also when the the stars were not eclipsing each other, suggesting the existence of a third body.

With all the discoveries that keep on being made you would think that whenever something new is found, we wouldn’t be surprised any more. But that’s the beauty of science, it always surprises you. That’s why is so cool!

E ‘un fatto ben noto in astronomia che la maggior parte delle stelle hanno una stella compagna, o in altre parole, fanno parte di un sistema binario. Si è quindi pensato per molti anni che l’esistenza di pianeti in un sistema con due stelle fosse un’ipostesi plausibile. Ieri, la missione di Kepler della NASA ha trasformato questa ipotesi in realtà. Infatti, Kepler ha scoperto un pianeta, chiamato Kepler 16-b, osservando il suo transito davanti alle sue stelle madri. Kepler non può vedere direttamente il pianeta, ma è in grado di misurare la riduzione della luminosità delle stelle quando il pianeta le sta attraversando.

Sembra però, che Kepler 16-b non avrebbe mai potuto ospitare la vita. Infatti è un pianeta gigante molto freddo, circa le dimensioni di Saturno e fatto probabilmente metà da roccia e metà da gas, in orbita intorno a due stelle 200 anni luce dalla Terra. Entrambe le stelle sono più piccole del nostro sole. La più grande ha il 69% la massa del sole, mentre la più piccola ha solo il 20% la massa della nostra stella. Kepler 16-b orbita entrambe le stelle ogni 229 giorni. Un periodo orbitale simile a quello di Venere, che è di 225 giorni. Tuttavia, il pianeta è al di fuori della zona abitabile dove l’acqua liquida potrebbe formarsi, perché entrambe le stelle sono più fredde del nostro sole.

E’ interessante il modo in cui è stata fatta la scoperta. Un gruppo di ricercatori guidato da Laurance Doyle del SETI Institute di Mountain View, in California, ha analizzato i dati di Kepler ed ha visto che entrambe le stelle si eclissavano l’una con l’altra dal punto di vista della Terra. Tuttavia, il team ha notato una riduzione nella luminosità anche quando le stelle non si eclissavano, suggerendo l’esistenza di un terzo corpo.

Ogni volta che una nuova scoperta viene fatta, e ti sorprende, ti viene da pensare che non c’è nient’altro che ti possa sorprendere. Ma invece non è cosi. E forse questo è il bello della scienza, ti sorprende sempre.

Just a few days ago NASA released the latest pictures from the LRO (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter), that take a much closer look than before of the Apollo 12, 14 and 17 landing sites.

As a quick, recap, Apollo 11 was the first mission to land on the Moon, on July 20 1969. Apollo 17 was the last one, in 1972. All the missions in between landed as well, except for Apollo 13, which had an accident on the way to the Moon and had to return back on Earth. On each mission, two astronauts got to walk on the Moon, summing up to a total of 12 people. That’s right, only 12 human beings got to walk on another world.

These new images of the Apollo 12, 14 and 17 landing sites are the highest resolution ever taken of another heavenly body. The LRO was at just 21 km (13 miles) above the surface of the Moon when it snapped them. The pictures are quite stunning. You can make out plenty of details, such as the tracks where the astronauts walked, as well as details of the descent/ascent stages. The lunar rover trucks are also visible. But what about the flags? According to LRO principal investigator Mark Robinson, the flags probably won’t exist anymore, given the harsh condition they have been exposed for over forty years: “I’m not sure if the flags still exist, given the extreme heat and cold cycle and the harsh UV environment. The flags were made of nylon, and personally I would be surprised if anything was left of them since it has been over 40 years since they were left on the Moon and the flags we have here on Earth fade after they are left outside for one summer. If the flags are still there they are probably in pretty rough shape.” Robinson said. The LRO has set the mission to create a very detailed map of the Moon as a precursor to future manned missions. P.S. If you still meet a denialist that claims that the Moon landings never occurred, you can refer them to this page. If he/she will still stick to his ridiculous theory, just give up. If someone today still refuses the incredible amount of evidence that was collected that proves that the Moon landings actually happened, he/she just doesn’t want to see it.

Solo alcuni giorni fa la NASA ha rilasciato le ultime immagini dell’LRO (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter), che ha dato uno sguardo molto vicino ai siti deigli allunaggi delle missioni Apollo 12, 14 e 17.

Facendo un rapido riepilogo, Apollo 11 fu la prima missione ad atterrare sulla Luna, il 20 luglio 1969. Apollo 17 fu l’ultima, nel 1972. Tutte le missioni in mezzo atterrarono pure, ad eccezione di Apollo 13, che ha avuto un incidente sulla via per la Luna e ha dovuto tornare indietro sulla Terra. In ogni missione, due astronauti hanno camminato sulla Luna, per un totale di 12 persone. Proprio così, soltanto 12 esseri umani hanni camminato su un altro mondo.

Queste nuove immagini dei luoghi di atterraggio di Apollo 12, 14 e 17 hanno la più alta risoluzione mai scattata di un altro corpo celeste. L’LRO si trovava ad appena 21 km sopra la superficie della Luna, quando le ha scattate. Le immagini sono sorprendenti. Si può scorgere un sacco di dettagli, come le tracce su cui gli astronauti camminarono, ed i dettagli delle fasi di discesa/ascesa. Anche le tracce dei rover lunari sono visibili. E le bandiere? Secondo il ricercatore principale dell’LRO Mark Robinson, le bandiere probabilmente non esistono più, date le condizioni difficili a cui sono state esposte per più di 40 anni: “Non sono sicuro se le bandiere esistono ancora, dato il ciclo di caldo e freddo estremi ed il micidiale ambiente UV. Le bandiere erano fatte di nylon, e personalmente sarei sorpreso se qualcosa sia rimasto visto che sono passati oltre 40 anni da quando sono state lasciate sulla Luna e le bandiere che abbiamo qui sulla Terra si scoloriscono dopo che sono state lasciate fuori per un’estate. Se le bandiere sono ancora lì probabilmente sono in uno stato piuttosto mal ridotto. ” L’LRO ha la missione di creare una mappa molto dettagliata della Luna come precursore per le future missioni umane. P.S.: Se ancora incontrare un negazionista che sostiene che gli sbarchi lunari non si sono verificati, riferiteli a questa pagina. Se lui/lei resterà ancora attaccato alla sua ridicola teoria, semplicemente rinunciare a convincerli. Se qualcuno oggi si rifiuta ancora di accettare l’incredibile quantità di prove raccolte che dimostrano che gli sbarchi lunari sono veramente accaduti, semplicemente non vuole vederle.

Lately I have been reading a few books on World War II. I had already written about “If this is a man“, by Primo Levi, a beautiful and at the same time terrifying account of his story in the Auschwitz concentration camps. The last book I read is called “Benevolence and Betrayal“, by Alexander Stille, which tells the story of five Jewish families under the Fascism, under the dictetorship of Benito Mussolini in Italy. The book is so well written that is hard to stop reading, and it entangles the personal stories of those families with the horrible events that slowly led to the invasion of the Germans in Italy and the Jewish deportations to the concentration camps. I reccomend it to everyone.

Today I clicked on a link from TED.com, and a speech by Sarah Kaminsky popped up. Sarah tells the story of her father, Adolfo Kaminsky, a member of the French resistance during WWII, and an identity document forger who saved thousands of lives. Adolpho continued forging documents even after the war, assisting the Jewish emigration to Israel, it did forge documents during the Algerian war and he did so for many other countries at war. The speech caught my attention because his story, like many others told in “Benevolence and Betrayal”, shows the extraordinary good things that people can do during the horrible times of persecution and war.

Ultimamente ho letto alcuni libri sulla Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Avevo già scritto su “Se questo è un uomo” di Primo Levi, un magnifico ed allo stesso tempo terrificante racconto della sua esperienza nei campi di concentramento di Auschwitz. L’ultimo libro che ho letto si chiama “Uno su mille“, di Alexander Stille, che racconta la storia di cinque famiglie ebree sotto il fascismo, sotto la dittatura di Benito Mussolini. Il libro è scritto così bene che è difficile smettere di leggerlo, incrociando le storie personali di quelle famiglie con gli eventi orribili che lentamente hanno portato all’invasione dei tedeschi in Italia ed alla deportazione degli ebrei nei campi di concentramento. Lo consiglio a tutti.

Oggi ho cliccato su un link di TED.com, ed è spuntato un discorso di Sarah Kaminsky. Sarah racconta la storia di suo padre, Adolfo Kaminsky, un membro della resistenza francese durante la seconda guerra mondiale, ed un falsario di documenti di identità che ha salvato migliaia di vite. Adolpho ha continuato la falsificazione di documenti anche dopo la guerra, assistendo l’emigrazione ebraica in Israele, falsificando documenti durante la guerra d’Algeria e lo ha fatto per molti altri paesi in guerra. Il discorso ha attirato la mia attenzione perché la sua storia, come tante altre raccontate in “Uno su mille”, mostra le cose straordinarie che le persone possono fare durante i tempi orribili di persecuzione e di guerra.
