Powering the world with Solar Energy alone, and zero carbon emissions. How much area would it take? Less than you think.
The map below has been created by the LAGI (Land Art Generator Initiative), an organization that tries to bring together artists, architects, scientists, and engineers in collaboration to produce images like the one you see. By using the data from the US Department of Energy of the world consumption of energy in all its forms, LAGI has come up with this map. In yellow is the area needed to be covered by solar panels in the year 2030, distributed around the world relative to use and sunlight.
According to the United Nations, 170,000 square kilometers of forest is destroyed each year. If we constructed solar farms at the same rate, we would be done in 3 years.
I don’t know about you, but I was expecting a lot more area, and when I first saw the picture, I was stunned.

Alimentare il mondo solamente con energia solare, e zero emissioni di carbonio. Quanta area di terreno ci vorrebbe? Meno di quello che pensi. La mappa che vedi e’ stata creata dal LAGI (Land Art Generator Initiative), un’organizzazione che cerca di far collaborare artisti, architetti, scenziati ed ingegneri in produrre grafici come questo. Usando i dati dal Dipartimento dell’Energia degli Stati Uniti riguardanti il consumo di energia del monto intero in tutte le sue forme, il LAGI ha creato questa mappa. Le aree gialle sono quelle che dovrebbero essere occupate da pannelli solari nell’anno 2030, distribuite in tutto il mondo in base all’utilizzo di energia e alla luce solare.
Secondo le Nazioni Unite, 170.000 chilometri quadrati di foresta vengono distrutti ogni anno, Se costruissimo impianti solari con lo stesso passo, finiremmo in 3 anni.
Non so tu, ma io mi aspettamo un’area molto piu’ grande, e quando ho visto la mappa per la prima volta, sono rimasto sbigottito.
